Complete Guide to Plastic Flake Processing: The Critical Upstream Stage of Recycled Plastics

  • Feb 25
  • 2 min read

Plastic flake processing is one of the most critical upstream operations in the recycled plastics industry.

Whether the material comes from production scrap, defective products, or post-consumer plastic containers, it must first go through a complete flake processing system before it can be converted into raw material suitable for pelletizing, injection molding, or further processing.

What Is Plastic Flake Processing?

Plastic flake processing refers to converting recycled or production-generated plastic into standardized flakes through sorting, washing, and shredding.

The purpose is to transform unstable plastic waste into material that downstream equipment can process consistently and reliably.

Common materials include:

  • PET beverage bottles and food containers

  • PE detergent bottles and dairy containers

  • PP food trays and packaging materials

  • PS foam and rigid plastic products

Without proper processing, these materials often contain mixed polymers, contamination, or inconsistent particle sizes — all of which directly affect recycled material performance.

Standard Processing Steps

The goal of plastic flake processing is to convert collected plastic into stable, process-ready raw material. A professional system typically includes:

1. Sorting and Removal of Contaminants

Manual and automated systems (such as optical sorting equipment) are used to separate different plastic types and remove incompatible materials. This reduces contamination risk during downstream melting.

2. Washing Process

Multi-stage washing systems remove oil, labels, adhesives, and organic residues, ensuring the flakes meet cleanliness standards required for pelletizing and molding.

3. Shredding

Cleaned plastics are shredded into uniform flakes, typically 3–8 mm in size. Consistent flake size improves feeding stability during pelletizing, extrusion, and injection molding.

Downstream Applications

Properly processed plastic flakes can be used for:

  • Re-pelletizing

  • Extrusion molding (pipes, sheets)

  • Injection molding (structural parts, appliance housings)

Yung Iee’s Plastic Flake Processing Solutions

Yung Iee Green Materials Co., Ltd. specializes in upstream plastic flake processing and recycled material preparation. We process PET, PE, PP, and PS materials and convert recycled plastics into stable, usable flake feedstock.

Our advantages include:

  • Clear source structure to reduce polymer mixing risk

  • Multi-stage sorting and washing for improved cleanliness

  • Stable flake size suitable for mass production

  • Batch management systems that support ESG and supply chain audits

Our role is not only to process plastic flakes, but to solve instability at the upstream stage — before materials enter your production line.
